Moving from Climber to Connector

When it comes to leadership, most people fall into one of two categories: climbers or connectors.
Climbers focus on personal career advancement—the next position, promotion, or win. Connectors, on the other hand, prioritize team development, collaboration, and trust.

We can all picture leaders who fit each category. But here’s the real question: Which one are you?

If I’m being honest, I see a little of both in myself. I’m driven to climb—but I also have a natural pull toward connecting with people. Over time, I’ve discovered something powerful: You actually climb faster when you become a better connector.

Because here’s the truth—if you try to climb without connecting, there will always be a group at the bottom ready to pull the ladder out from under you.

The Difference Between Climbers and Connectors

Climbers:

  • Think vertically and focus on positions, titles, and hierarchy
  • Value competition and often adopt a win-at-all-costs mindset
  • Strive to build a personal brand and stand apart
  • Measure success by how far they rise above others

Connectors, on the other hand:

  • Think horizontally and focus on relationships
  • Prioritize cooperation, communication, and shared success
  • Seek to build team buy-in and trust rather than personal image
  • Want to stand with their team, not apart from it

The best leaders know how to balance ambition with connection. They climb—but they take their people with them.

5 Practical Ways to Become a Better Connector

1. INITIATE CONNECTION.

Don’t wait for others to approach you. Take the first step. Engage with your team, learn their stories, and find ways to serve them.

2. ASK GREAT QUESTIONS.

Curiosity builds bridges. Ask questions that uncover the why behind a teammate’s actions or decisions—it’s one of the fastest ways to build understanding and trust.

3. BE INTERESTED, NOT INTERESTING.

Shift the focus from yourself to others. The best leaders make people feel seen, valued, and significant.

4. LISTEN TO LEARN.

Don’t listen just to respond—listen to understand. Active listening is one of the greatest gifts a leader can give. When people feel heard, they engage more deeply.

5. STAY TEACHABLE.

Great connectors never stop learning. One of the most impactful leaders in my life was deeply teachable, no matter how experienced they were. They would often say, “Remember that conversation we had? Here’s what I learned and how I applied it.” That kind of humility draws people closer and strengthens connection.

The Climb Is Stronger Together

If our goal is to advance the mission, not just our careers, we must learn to lead like connectors. When we focus on connection, everyone climbs higher together.
