Talent Isn’t Enough: 7 Intangibles That Separate Great Leaders from the Pack

At the highest levels of leadership, everyone is talented. We see it in sports and we see it in business, too. Talent gets you in the room, but it doesn’t keep you there. So when it comes to finding and recruiting talent, what’s the difference maker? What separates one talented person from another?

So is talent enough? We don’t think so.

At Maxwell Leadership, we’ve seen patterns emerge that are common among talented team members, and we’ve distilled it down to a few key differentiators. Talent alone won’t take you where you want to go. But talent plus a few key intangibles is a difference maker. If you’re a talented team member, or prospective team member looking to rise above the pack, then pay attention and get really great at these five non-negotiables:

1. CONFIDENCE.

Confidence isn’t arrogance; it’s belief. It’s the quiet certainty you belong in the room, bring value, and are capable of growth. Start with paying attention to the consistent thoughts you replay in your mind. Are you overly critical of yourself? Do you believe you deserve a seat at the table? You’re the driver of belief in what you’re capable of, so humbly (but accurately!) believe you’re the person for the job and task at hand.

2. INITIATIVE.

Don’t ask; do. What extra things can you take on? How can you make yourself available to the team and your leaders? Be the first to respond to the request for additional help, or volunteer to take the lead on a new project. It might be outside your job scope or description, but it will help you stand out, especially in a culture where very few are willing to go outside their defined roles.

3. FOCUS.

John Maxwell often says, “With focus, your talent and abilities gain direction and intentionality.” Focus means seeing past what is right in front of you and visualizing what can be. It’s keeping the bigger picture in mind, and controlling what you can control. Sometimes we call it, “keeping the main thing the main thing.” Don’t let the accolades or rewards of others discourage or deflate you. Keep the long game in mind; work smart and hard until your turn comes up. Then be ready to take it.

4. PREPARATION.

Preparing yourself in all aspects is crucial. Are you mentally, physically, and emotionally up for the challenges that face you? I heard football great Payton Manning once say, “Pressure is something you feel if you’re not prepared.” Whatever you do, whether it’s coaching, leading a team, or giving a keynote, be prepared. Confidence comes with preparation, knowing you’re ready for whatever you’re about to face.

5. PERSEVERANCE.

Success isn’t guaranteed; it’s earned. And it comes from being determined to succeed, not destined to. Realizing the difference feels incredibly empowering. Reflect on past setbacks and identify the lessons you learned through them. Use current obstacles as steppingstones and learning opportunities.

6. HUMILITY.

Humility may not always get the spotlight, but it’s often the backbone of great leadership. Talented people who stay grounded attract trust, collaboration, and respect. Humility means you’re open to feedback, willing to admit mistakes, and eager to learn from others—regardless of titles or experience. The best leaders don’t just lead with strength; they lead with service and a learner’s posture.

7. COACHABILITY.

Talent becomes transformational when it’s paired with teachability. Are you able to receive guidance without defensiveness? Do you implement feedback without excuse-making? Being coachable means you value growth over ego and direction over self-reliance. The most promotable people are those who listen, adjust, and keep getting better.

You may have talent and be good at what you do, but are you a talent-plus person? In today’s environments, talent is expected, but how you show up is what gets you promoted and helps you lead others well. When you can marry your talent with these other intangibles, you’ll be unstoppable
